Benjamin Northey, Principal Conductor



Benjamin Northey assumed the position of Principal Conductor of Melbourne (then Australia Pro Arte) Chamber Orchestra in 2007 after serving as Resident Guest Conductor from 2002 until 2006.

Winner of the 2001 Symphony Australia Young Conductor of the Year Competition, Northey studied with John Hopkins at the University of Melbourne and also in Australia with Jorma Panula. In 2002 he was accepted into the Sibelius Academy conducting course in Helsinki where he studied under Leif Segerstam and Atso Almila. His final year of studies in 2006 was as a guest student at the Stockholm Royal Academy of Music in Jorma Panula’s conducting class. His 2005 diploma concert with the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra was awarded the highest possible mark.

Northey made his professional debut with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2003 and has since returned regularly as a guest conductor. From 2002-6 he was Resident Guest Conductor of the Australia Pro Arte Chamber orchestra and from 2007 has been appointed the orchestra’s Principal Conductor. He appears regularly with leading orchestras in Australia and has enjoyed return invitations with the West Australian, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras as well as the Queensland Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. His 2006 Masters Series concert with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra was voted ‘Concert of the Year’ by Adelaide critics and audiences.

Northey made his European debut with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg in 2005. He has also appeared in masterclass concert performances in Scandinavia with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gaevle Symphony Orchestra and the Vaasa City Orchestra and conducted a critically acclaimed Swedish tour with the Sodra Halsinglands Orkesterforenings in 2006 and directed the Futurum Sinfonietta for the 2006 Stockholm New Music Festival.
