Calvin Bowman - MCO

Calvin Bowman, Associate Artistic Director



Calvin Bowman assumed the new role of Deputy Artistic Director of Melbourne (then Australia Pro Arte) Chamber Orchestra in 2007. He is a gifted composer and acclaimed player of piano, organ and harpsichord.

Dr Bowman graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts from Yale University with the assistance of a Fulbright scholarship, prior to which he graduated from Melbourne University. His principal teachers included John O'Donnell and Thomas Murray (organ) and Donald Thornton (piano).

He presented the complete Bach organ works in 1995 to critical acclaim. In 2001, he had the privilege of re-opening the Melbourne Town Hall organ following its multi-million dollar restoration by presenting the world premiere of 'Voices' by Philip Glass in the presence of the composer. He has appeared as the keyboard soloist with many prominent Australian orchestras.

Dr Bowman's art songs have been accorded much praise and his song compositions have been commissioned widely. His works have been performed by ensembles and soloists in the united Kingdom, the United States and Australia. Performers include Genevieve Lacey, Jeffrey Crellin, Australia Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and the Flinders Quartet.
